Bakau - A Town With Crocodile Pool

On the Atlantic Ocean coast of The Gambia Bakau is a town lying west of Banjul. It is well known for its crocodile pool Bakau Kachikally, for Cape Point beaches and for its botanical gardens. This town is the most developed town in The Gambia and It is the first major suburb outside Banjul. Around the holy crocodile pool in the central district of Bakau, Kachikally legend has it that Bakau grew up. Bakau grew in importance as it became a favorite place for private residences where it was a small village at the turn of the 19th century. Because of the beautiful palm fringed beaches it became favorite for the private residences of colonial administrators.



Old village still exists despite being a major town and is run like any other in The Gambia with an 'Alkali' which similar to ‘Mayor’.  Bakau Wasulung Kunda is the smaller village within the old village. Providing a lot of employment tourism is the most important business activity in Bakau. It is also the main income of the municipal authorities. There are few hotels on a beach at Cape Point. Most of the banks have branches in this area and also there are offices for several companies. There is a big market along the main road which is famous for its fresh fruits and vegetables. Another main business activity is fishing where there port by the town which is attracted by many visitors.

In 1947, The Bakau Primary school was established and it is one of the oldest schools in the country. Today there are several public and private schools.
