In central Victoria, Australia Bendigo is a regional city which is located in the City of Greater Bendigo. The city was established in the year 1851. From the state capital of Melbourne it is approximately 131 kilometers. The elevation of the city is 738 feet above of the sea level. The total area of the city is 2998.97 square kilometers.The population of the city was 85,080 according to the 2006 census. It is home to around 110,000 and the Greater Bendigo municipality includes some nearby towns. The mean maximum temperature is 20.7 degrees celsius and mean minimum temperature is 7.5 degree Celsius. The annual rainfall is 550.7 milli meters.
Bendigo is notable for its gold mining history and Victorian architectural heritage. The residents who live in Bendigo are called as Bendigonians. It is originally known as Bendigo’s Valley, and the city grew quickly out of the Victorian gold rush. The Bendigo Stock Exchange (BSX), the Bendigo Bank and Australia's only provincially headquartered retail bank is in the city and it established as a major provincial hub and minor financial centre.
The area was covered by today’s City of Greater Bendigo was occupied by the clans of the Dja Dja Wrung. Because of their rich hunting grounds they were regarded by other tribes as being a superior people before the European settlement. Dja Dja Wrung was described as a strong, physically well-developed people by early Europeans.
The name was derived from an employee of the Mount Alexander Run who is an ex-sailor or bullock driver. and nicknamed Bendigo after the Nottingham prize-fighter, William Abednego Thompson, generally known as “Bendigo Thompson”. Bendigo Creek was named after him, and the Bendigo Goldfield after the creek. Bendigo has many magnificent ornate buildings built in a late Victorian colonial style, contributing to a picturesque "French" cityscape.
